PAINT DISPOSAL

Latex Paint Disposal

Latex paint is not considered a household hazardous waste.

You can also give the usable paint to someone who can use it, such as friends and neighbors, SWAP shops, theater groups, or housing assistance organizations.  If you must dispose of unusable latex paint please follow these directions.

            *  For small amounts:  Remove the lid and let dry in the can.  Stir the paint occasionally to

speed dry.  Or, brush paint in layers on newspaper or cardboard.

         * For larger amounts: Line a cardboard box with heavy plastic.  Layer an absorbent

material (kitty litter, sawdust, shredded newspaper) on bottom.  Pour a layer of

paint; let dry.  Repeat as necessary.  These layers will speed up the drying process.

*For latex paint that has separated: Pour the clear liquid layer into a cardboard box

lined with plastic.  Mix the liquid with an equal amount of kitty litter or other

absorbent and let it dry.  Allow the leftover paint in the bottom of the can dry out,

using one of the methods above.

*Dispose of the dried paint and other materials in the trash.  The dry, empty paint

cans with lids off can also be disposed of with your trash.

Oil based paint

Disposal of usable leftover oil based paint through a household hazardous waste program can be expensive.

However, it is considered a hazardous waste.  Therefore, if using the leftover oil based paint is not possible it should be brought to an Outagamie County Clean Sweep Program

Solvents that are used to clean paint brushes can be REUSED.  Allow the paint to settle to the bottom of the container used to clean the brush (about 4 hours).  The clear solvent that results from this process can be reused.  The remaining paint sludge should be allowed to dry thoroughly and then disposed of with your trash.
