What are hazardous wastes? Any solid, liquid or contained gaseous material that is no longer used and has one or more of the following characteristics.
| IGNITABLE | paint wastes, adhesives, thinners, mineral spirits and some degreasers and solvents. |
| REACTIVE | cynanide plating wastes, sulfide containing wastes, toluene disocyanate. |
| TOXIC | paints with metal pigment, paint filters, some pesticides, chemicals such as cadmium, mercury, lead and arsenic. |
| CORROSIVE | rust removers, acid or alkaline cleaning fluids, battery acids. |
Businesses that monthly generate the following qualify as a VSQG recipient
* Less than 100 kg (220 pounds) of hazardous waste
* 1 kg (2.2 pounds) or less of acute hazardous waste
* 100kg (220 pounds) or less of acute hazardous waste spill material
Businesses that store or accumulate the following qualify as a VSQG recipient
* 1000 kg (2205 pounds) or less of hazardous waste (approx five 55-gallon drums)
* 1 kg( 2.2 pounds) or less of acute hazardous waste
* 100 kg (220 pounds) or less of acute hazardous waste spill materials
Businesses exceeding the limits in any of these categories of hazardous waste generation are required to report their waste generation to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
